May we update you? 2018

Excuse the shameless pun... wait a second, don’t excuse it, enjoy it!

I have had an absolute blast this year performing with my quartet much more regularly as we start to establish a jazz presence within the Ardleigh Green community in Havering alongside our other performances at Queens Theatre Hornchurch and other venues. I forget how although my quartet album seems like a distant memory of a dusty 2012 the music feels as fresh and new as the day I wrote it. On Friday 11th May alongside Katie Patterson, Tom Millar and Jason Simpson we had a burning time performing this music alongside well known standards and it was such a fantastic evening. I even got the clarinet out which I’ve been recently getting back into in a more serious way! Another date for this will be announced in the near future, most likely early July!

Thanks to John Morris for this photograph and more on his @aggschool twitter feed!

It has also been busy with lots of function performing as wedding season comes pinging around the corner yet again, so it has been great to dust off the dance classics too as I never tire of good music no matter what it is!

Here’s a list of a select few dates in June of things that I’m up to.

Sunday 3rd June - Jon Bennett Big Band 40th Anniversary Gig (more details to follow)
Sunday 10th June - Ken Turner Big Band @ Hornchurch Conservative Club
Sunday 17th June - Andrew Linham Quartet @ Luna Lounge Leytonstone
Wednesday 27th June - London City Big Band @ The Spice of Life

Also, if you are interested I’m leading some large scale schools projects during the middle of June linking with Havering Music School and Havering Schools’ Music Association alongside a collection of primary, junior and senior schools which is always exciting so do check out Queens Theatre Hornchurch - Junior Music Festivals.

As of next week I’m disappearing on a writing retreat and I cannot wait to share with you the new music I’ll have in my rucksack when I get back!

Quartet Gig Friday 11th May 2018

Hello everyone!

I’m really looking forward to bringing my quartet back to the Ardleigh Green Family Centre for an intimate gig this Friday. The last gig was a big success and featured the talents of Liam Dunachie, Darren McCarthy and David Ingamells who were a stellar rhythm section playing some original music by myself alongside some familiar standards.

I’ve been working on some new music for this Friday which I’m really excited to try out for a first time in front of an audience - there’s always something magical about the first time a new piece of music is premiered from the first time some children sing a new song to launching new big band music or even a musical - that feeling is always the same.

It reminded me of the work I did on the first album back in 2012. It was one of the first major projects I led after finishing my MA and I still get such pleasure playing the music from that album as it feels like a reminder of where I was and what I wanted to achieve six years ago - my times flies! The album to me has much more a sense of space and place than the big band album which is much more like a long (and arduous!) journey. There’s a really good blog on this by Tim Garland that’s worth checking out which explores amazingly about place and journey in music.

You can listen to this on Spotify too!

This Friday I have the incredible rhythm section of Tom Millar (piano), Jason Simpson (bass) and Katie Patterson (drums). These musicians are not only brilliant players but are dear friends so it will be a good excuse to ‘get the band back together’ as usually these guys are working hard in my big band playing that crazy bunch of tunes!

I’m also told by the lovely gig organisers that crucially and importantly alcohol is available this time - after all, as I always say, the more you drink the better we sound! #jazzjoke

I do hope you can make it as it is going to be a great night and it is really exciting to be supporting a new jazz night in Havering and the wider community. They also used one of my hilarious new pictures on the poster as below!
